Society for the Study of Social Problems: HEALTH, HEALTH POLICY AND HEALTH SERVICES DIVISION NEWSLETTER SPRING/SUMMER 2023 MESSAGE FROM THE CO-CHAIRS As we are facing emerging public health challenges in the context of pandemic, climate change, and increasing digitalization, we will continue the legacy of our division to inspire and engage dialogues and research to advocate a healthier tomorrow for all people, regardless of whatever differences. - Dr. Yuying Shen and Dr. Jennifer Roebuck Bulanda OUTGOING CO-CHAIR: DR. JENNIFER ROEBUCK BULANDA It has been an honor to serve as Co-Chair of the Division for the past two years. When I originally took the position, I did not anticipate the many opportunities and learning experiences it would provide. Being in this role has allowed me to meet Division members whom I look forward to working with far into the future, to participate in shaping the Division's annual conference sessions, and to better understand the structure of the SSSP organization and the ways we can work together to promote greater justice in health and health care. Even throughout the difficult past two years of the pandemic, our Division members have been able to participate in virtual Division business meetings, share updates through our newsletter, celebrate the accomplishments of our members with scholarship awards, and share our work and advocacy at the annual meetings. Thank you to all of our Division members who have served on committees, organized or presented in conference sessions, or contributed ideas to our Division's work over the past year. I look forward to continuing to actively participate in the Health Division after my role as Co-Chair ends in August, and I really encourage all of the Division's members to consider nominating themselves or a colleague for the Co-Chair role in the future. INCOMING CO-CHAIR: DR. VIRGINIA KUULEI BERNDT Dr. Virginia Berndt, an assistant professor of sociology at Texas A&M International University, has been elected as the incoming co-chair for our division. Dr. Berndt will begin her term when our current co-chair, Dr. Jennifer Bulanda, ends her term at the 2023 Annual meeting in August. Please join us in extending our sincere congratulations to Dr. Berndt! As a chronically ill and disabled scholar specializing in the sociology of health and illness, Dr. Berndt is well-positioned and committed to uplift and amplify scholars and activists of underrepresented backgrounds within the organization of the SSSP to strive towards social justice within academia and beyond. We are confident that Dr. Berndt will be a terrific leader for our Division, and we look forward to working with Dr. Berndt to increase our Division's visibility and presence in health-related forums! "Katz Rothman shows that biomedicine has the key elements of an imperial power: economic leverage, the faith of its citizens, and governmental rule. She investigates the Western colonial underpinnings of the empire and its rapid intrusion into everyday life, focusing on the realms of birth and death. This provides her with a powerful vantage point from which to critically examine the current moment, when the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the power structures of the empire in unprecedented ways while sparking the most visible resistance it has ever seen." William Cabin William Cabin has received the 2023 Outstanding Scholarship Award based on his body of work focused primarily on the Medicare home health and hospice benefits. Bill's work is widely cited and recognized as the leading source of peer-reviewed studies on these topics. With nearly 25 years of experience as a home care and hospice executive-level manager, Bill's work comes from a unique place of lived experience that much academic literature lacks. Bill's research unearths insights on structural issues in a neglected area of policy, centering on the lived experiences of home care nurses and social workers; the impact of ownership type of home health agencies on cost, profit, and quality of care; the adverse impacts of patient care resulting from the capitalization of the Medicare Hospice Benefit; and more.
