The Special Problems Divisions

What are special problems divisions?
Special Problems Divisions provide groups of members with interests in a specific part of the field. Division activity shapes the annual meeting of the Society by organizing paper sessions and panels. Divisions initiate new programs. Division chairs form the nominating committee for the major officers of the Society and for the Board of Directors. Divisions provide an opportunity for young scholars to present their work to a critical audience of scholar advocates interested in good research and social action to move toward solutions for social problems. Members interested in emerging areas of social problems form new divisions.

How do I become an active member of a division? All members of SSSP are eligible to become members of up to three Special Problems Divisions at no extra charge. You become a member simply by checking the appropriate box(s) on the membership application. Divisions provide newsletters to communicate items and news of interest to the members. Divisions hold their business meeting at the annual meeting and elect chairpersons to serve two-year terms. Divisions offer a small group of scholars an opportunity for informal exchange and cooperation in social problems research.

Why should I be a member of a division? Divisions offer an opportunity to meet others who have similar research/action interests. Divisions offer a chance to cooperate with others in doing research and planning programs. Divisions open the door to positions of responsibility in the Society for the Study of Social Problems.
